Team of officials visits college in Valachil Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA A team of eight officials from the police, the District Child Protection Unit, the Child Welfare Committee and the Pre University Department, on Monday visited Expert Pre University College in Valachil in view of complaints from parents about their children being held back in the institution’s hostel. Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar told reporters here on Tuesday that the visit came after calls were made to him and other officials by parents accusing the college management of not allowing them to meet their children staying in the hostel and also not allowing them to speak with their children. The parents also said that their children were living under tremendous stress in the hostel.

During pandemic, child marriages and sexual abuse cases rise in the Nilgiris Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA UDHAGAMANDALAM Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of children in the Nilgiris who have been sexually abused increased by more than 50 %, according to figures provided by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU). According to officials, 37 instances of sexual abuse of minors were recorded in 2019, prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. But, the number rose to 56 in 2020. And, the first four months of 2021 have already seen 22 cases being recorded. During the pandemic-related lockdown, children left alone at home have been at risk of sexual abuse, especially by persons known to the family.
