How COVID cases are reported in the Edmonds School District

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: April 28, 2021 83 We received a reader inquiry regarding how confirmed COVID-19 cases in classrooms are reported by the Edmonds School District, so we asked the district’s communications team about it. Among the questions raised: Whether district staff was being transparent with the public about classes switching back to in-person learning after a positive case was detected. In addition, the reader wanted to know why the district changed its policy from being open about the number of cases in a school to only telling the affected class.  In response, District Communications Manager Harmony Weinberg said the district does not have any protocols in place to communicate all positive cases to families districtwide.

PHOTO/COURTESY Advertisement Kanungu Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajji Shafique Ssekandi has ordered for the reopening of sand mines which were closed in the district, early April, following the death of two people. The reopening was agreed upon during a series of security meetings between a security team and the sand miners- purposed to issue new regulations to guide site owners, truck drivers, sand miners and loaders. RDC Ssekandi who presided over the meetings at Kiruruma in Kihihi and Kabyamisinga in Katete Sub County- was meant to pave way for preventing further deaths incidents in the district.

Huron Valley closes Heritage Elementary due to COVID-19

An elementary school in the Huron Valley Schools will be closed for a week due to COVID-19. School officials shut down Heritage Elementary for in-person learning after three students at the building tested positive for COVID-19, resulting in 88 quarantines. Initially, four classrooms were to be remote before administrators decided to keep all Heritage students virtual through at least April 23. The earliest they will return to face-to-face would be April 26. Since April 7 and returning from spring break, the district has recorded 91 positive cases of COVID-19 across all buildings, resulting in 703 quarantines in a little over a week. That includes five COVID-19 positive tests from Milford High School baseball players, resulting in 94 quarantines on April 16.

Larry Wolfe, who has been the associate principal with the Charles City High School for nearly nine years, will lead a new virtual and alternative learning campus as its principal. The move was approved by the Charles City Community Schools Board of Education on Monday night.
