Competing at the Summer Olympics in 2000 was the culmination of everything Jason Gervais worked for.
The then 24-year-old Timmins native competed in men’s discus throw at the Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. He remembers walking out onto the field and seeing his family along with his uncle and grandmother at the stadium.

“I also saw myself on the jumbotron and realized that millions of viewers all over the world were watching me,” Gervais says. “I knew I was physically ready to compete but mentally I was clearly not. I had next to no experience with that kind of mental pressure before.”

Kathi Maskell, a former mayor of Hanover, has won the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce Awards.
From her 34 years of teaching at James A. Magee Community School, to her current role as chair of the Hanover Public Library Board, Maskell is regarded as someone who served the community with grace and passion.

“Anything I have done or given in terms of volunteer work in this community has been repaid to me five times over,” Maskell said. “I’ve met so many wonderful people, I’ve been part of some really great projects over the years and I’m grateful to have had that opportunity to be part of those groups and to try to make a difference.”
