NC Gov. Cooper calls for special prosecutor to investigate shooting of Andrew Brown
RALEIGH, N.C. As national attention has focused on Elizabeth City following the shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr. by Pasquotank County deputies, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is calling for a special prosecutor to investigate.
“This would help assure the community and Mr. Brown’s family that a decision on pursuing criminal charges is conducted without bias,” Cooper said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. “This position is consistent with the change in the law recommended by our Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice which calls for a special prosecutor in police shootings.”

On April 21, Andrew Brown was shot and killed by deputies in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. They were executing a search warrant. It occurred around 8:30 that morning. We don’t know what happened, but here’s a quick review (via NYT):
Just before 8:30 a.m. on April 21, a Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office truck drove down a residential street and arrived at a home with deputies sitting in the back, dressed in tactical gear, video footage shows. Moments later, several shots were fired at Mr. Brown. (The video was obtained by WAVY, a Virginia-based television station, through a public records request.)
A judge ordered the disclosure of four body cam videos to Andrew Brown’s son and to one attorney within the next 10 days, but decided not to release the videos publicly.
