The New York attorney general’s office said Tuesday that it is conducting a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business empire, expanding what had previously been a civil probe.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the company is no longer purely civil in nature,” Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James, said in a statement.

NEW YORK (AP) The New York attorney general’s office said Tuesday that it is conducting a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business empire, expanding what had previously been a civil probe.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the company is no longer purely civil in nature,” Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James, said in a statement.
“We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA,” Levy said.

Two investigators from the New York Attorney General’s office will assist Manhattan prosecutors in their criminal probe into ex-president Donald Trump, a person familiar with the inquiry told the Daily News on Wednesday.
State staffers will work with Manhattan DA Cy Vance’s team which includes former federal prosecutor Mark Pomerantz, who joined in February after Vance secured years’ worth of Trump’s financial records as allowed by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
AG Tish James, who opened a civil probe into the Trump Organization in March 2019, on Tuesday said her office is now pursuing a criminal line of inquiry that could result in jailable charges against Trump.
Former US president Donald Trump has responded to the news that his business, the Trump Organisation, is under criminal investigation. We have informed the Trump Organisation that our investigation into the company is no longer purely civil in nature, a spokesman for New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a brief statement yesterday. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organisation in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan District Attorney. We have no additional comment at this time. Ms James office has been investigating whether the former president s business engaged in fraudulent practices by inflating or lowering the values of its properties to obtain better loans and tax breaks.
