Family of Woman Fatally Injured by Truck Calls for Prosecution of Motorist

By City News Service May 8, 2021 LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The family of a 77-year-old grandmother who was struck and killed by a pickup truck in Compton nearly 2 1/2 years ago called on the Los Angeles County District Attorney s Office today to reopen the case and file charges against the driver. Justa Garcia of Compton was struck about 5 a.m. on Dec. 19, 2018, at Caldwell Street and Wilmington Avenue and died at the scene. The motorist, whose name was not released by authorities, remained at the crash site and was interviewed by investigators. The District Attorney s Office twice reviewed the case during the tenure of former D.A. Jackie Lacey and most recently earlier this year and declined to prosecute the motorist, noting that the driver was not speeding and had the green light and that it was dark outside at the time and the victim was clad in dark-colored clothing, KTLA reported.

Deputy District Attorneys Garrett Dameron that he and fellow prosecutor Geoff Lewin had been ordered to remove the death penalty as punishment consideration in the case of Michael Christopher Mejia, who is awaiting trial on charges stemming from the 2017 killings of Whittier Police Officer Keith Boyer and Mejia s own cousin. Along with the murder charge, Barron and Leiva are facing two counts of child abuse involving two other children in the home. Leiva is also facing an allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on one of the youngsters in circumstances involving domestic violence.

By City News Service May 5, 2021 LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A longtime Los Angeles County prosecutor is suing the county, alleging she was repeatedly harassed and denied promotions by individuals within the office she believed were trying to destroy her career. Deputy District Attorney Linda Baek s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit alleges gender discrimination, retaliation, disability discrimination and failure to prevent harassment, discrimination and retaliation. Baek seeks unspecified damages in the suit brought Monday. A representative for the District Attorney s Office declined to comment on the suit. “The facts in this case stem from a coordinated pattern of continuing violations that began when Ms. Baek complained of sexual harassment by a co-worker in 2014, the suit states.

Jackson also faces 2 additional firearm charges - one count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and a felon carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. White faces one count of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.
