Local News: Local COVID-19 vaccine effort ramps up again (2/23/21)

Tuesday, February 23, 2021 By David Jenkins/Standard Democrat As the snow melts off local roadways, the local COVID-19 vaccine effort is ramping up once again. On Wednesday, the Missouri Delta Medical Center is holding a vaccine clinic for those needing their first Moderna vaccine. The clinic will take appointments from those in Phase 1B-Tier 2, which are high-risk individuals protecting those who are at increased risk for severe illness and anyone aged 65 and older. Adults with the following conditions qualify: cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Intellectual and/or developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, heart conditions such as heart failure, coronary artery disease (CAD) or cardiomyopathies, immunocompromised state from solid organ transplant, severe obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Thursday, January 28, 2021 By David Jenkins/Standard Democrat Only about 5.3% of Missouri’s population have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and while Scott County is above the state average, the rest of the area is lagging. According to numbers released by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, statewide there were 423,839 doses of the vaccine administered, with 326,272 Missourians receiving the first dose, making up 5.3% of the population. Meanwhile, 97,567 Missourians have received both doses. Locally, Scott County is above the state average, with 8.9% of the population receiving the first dose. So far in Scott County, there were 4,022 doses administered, with 3,390 getting the first dose and 630 receiving the second dose.

Tuesday, January 26, 2021 By David Jenkins/Standard Democrat Missouri ranks dead last among states for the percentage of residents who have received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. According to information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Monday, only 242,937 Missourians have received their first shot or 3,958 people per 100,000 residents. “As we have seen in many nationwide rankings throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we expect rankings by the state of vaccine administration to continue to ebb and flow as the difference in rates among many states is marginal,” according to a statement from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services issued Monday afternoon. “Currently, for instance, Missouri has the 10th lowest rate for new COVID-19 cases in the country with both PCR and antigen testing combined (6th when only accounting for the state’s confirmed PCR-tested cases).”

(KFVS) - Charleston R-1 administrators announced that classes will dismiss at 12 p.m. on Thursday, January 21 and that all students will begin virtual learning at home on Friday. School leaders said the switch to online studies is due to a spike of COVID-19 cases. The switch to virtual learning is temporary. Students will return to in-person classes on Monday, February 1. During the closure, all school facilities will undergo a deep cleaning.
