MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - In North Mississippi, people are being asked to conserve both energy and water to avoid a crisis as crews work to remove inches of snow from the roads.
The roads continue to improve in North Mississippi hour by hour as the plows start to catch up but officials say they will remain treacherous for several days with ice sticking around as the snow melts.

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) - Counties and cities across the state literally will hit the lottery if a new bill passed by the Mississippi Senate becomes law. Senate Bill 2825 would redirect $80 million of lottery revenue from the Mississippi Department of Transportation to the Emergency Road and Bridge Repair Fund for three years.
Now, Pearl River County officials are excited. The bridge on Shorty Burgess Road just outside of Picayune is the only bridge in Pearl River County closed by the state. That’s a good thing because funds are hard to come by.

Officials in Oxford are strongly advising residents to stay off the roads as ice and snow accumulations affect driving conditions.
City employees are working to get the roads clear, but they are not fully equipped to deal with this type of weather. The extremely cold temperatures brought by winter storms since Monday and cars on the road have made clearing the roads significantly more difficult.
“Due to the rarity of these types of events in the South, Oxford, like any other southern town, is not equipped to have the streets immediately cleared in the same way you may see in northern areas,” Mayor Robyn Tannehill said in a Facebook post on Monday.
