Coronavirus in Mississippi: 1,908 new cases, 4 deaths reported July 29

View Comments COVID-19 cases in Mississippi continue to climb, with 1,908 new cases reported by the Mississippi State Department of Health Thursday.  There were four coronavirus-related deaths reported on Thursday. One death occurred on Tuesday and three deaths occurred between June 27 and July 21, as identified from death certificate reports. The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 9,999 new COVID-19 cases between July 23-29. A week prior, the case count was 5,593.  Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 341,862 cases and 7,533 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.  The health department on Thursday reported 103 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,625 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 1,996 deaths reported as of Thursday, the latest figures available.

On Tuesday, the CDC reversed mask guidelines, saying people across the nation should wear masks indoors in high transmission areas regardless of vaccination status. The Mississippi State Department of Health released a similar missive Wednesday afternoon. It has nothing to do with science, the governor said in reference to the CDC guidelines, WAPT reported. The majority of Mississippi is considered a high COVID-19 transmission area because of low vaccination rates causing climbing cases of new infections, according to the CDC data tracker. On Thursday, the one-day count of new COVID-19 infections in Mississippi reached 1,908, with the seven-day total of new cases at 9,999.
