Two children on life support as Mississippi sees surge in delta variant cases © WAPT A COVID-19 patient on a ventilator Concern about the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant is rising in Mississippi. State health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said in a tweet Tuesday that seven children are in the ICU and two are on life support because of a surge in delta variant cases. Sign up for our Newsletters Dr. Dobbs corrected a previous report from the state health department that incorrectly stated 12 children were in the ICU and 10 were on life support. Dr. Alan Jones, associate vice chancellor for clinical affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, said the hospital is treating four pediatric COVID-19 patients. Two are on ventilators.

Mississippi health department blocks Facebook comments over COVID-19 misinformation

  Mississippi’s health department is aiming to combat misinformation on COVID-19 by limiting users ability to comment on its Facebook posts related to case numbers and vaccine distribution.  Liz Sharlot, a spokeswoman for the Mississippi State Department of Health, told The Associated Press that the “comments section of our Facebook page has increasingly come to be dominated by misinformation about COVID-19.”  Sharlot added that the false information included in the comments from various social media users could “mislead the public about the safety, importance and effectiveness of vaccination.”  ADVERTISEMENT While the comments section is open on department posts related to other health issues, including one on Tuesday about a program for cancer survivors, all posts from recent days related to COVID-19 cases as well as hospitalization, death and vaccination rates do not contain the comment function.
