JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Nurse practitioners are seeking more independence in Mississippi. There’s a history at the State Capitol of nurse practitioners seeking more independence.
In recent years, the state widened the radius up to 75 miles from their collaborating physician. Now, they’re asking to do away with that agreement altogether - if they have enough experience.
House Bill 1303 would allow nurse practitioners with 3,600 hours of “transition to practice” experience to no longer be required to have a contract with a collaborating physician.

Feb. 4 JACKSON A court fight over Initiative 65 is still underway, but that isn t stopping the health department from working to meet its deadlines to set up a medical marijuana program in Mississippi.
On Tuesday, the state board of health met to discuss the program it is obligated to establish under Initiative 65, the constitutional amendment voters overwhelmingly approved in November. State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the department is committed to meeting its deadlines to get the program launched this summer.

Four of the five states that passed cannabis-centric ballot initiatives on Election Day 2020 have since run into hurdles.
The pathway from ballot question to implementation has only been smooth for one of the five states to pass measures recently Arizona. Adult use sales began on Jan. 22, with many medical dispensaries expanding to adult use to accommodate the newly opened market.
