Human trafficking is one of the most profitable illegal enterprises globally and officials are saying that the crime is “on the rise” in the state of Mississippi.
According to the International Labor Organization, the business of human trafficking generates an estimated $150 billion in illegal profits every year, and there is no estimate as to how much of that is produced in Mississippi.
The state Attorney General’s office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies operated a week-long operation in December “to locate individuals attempting to lure children to meet for sex or asking them to produce child pornography.” The operation resulted in at least three arrests and one sentencing.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WTVA) - A shooting injured one person Wednesday morning near Hattiesburg High School, WDAM-TV reported.
A spokesman for the Hattiesburg Police Department said officers responded to a report of someone having a weapon near the school before 8:00.
Officers found the individual with the weapon and tried to approach him.
At that time, shots were fired and the male individual was struck.
He was later transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, the TV station reported.
A Hattiesburg police officer was involved in shooting the male individual, according to Maj. Johnny Poulos of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).

LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT/WTVA) - A Verona police officer is being treated for injuries after a struggle with a man at a convenience store.
Police Chief Marsenio Nunn said the officer and the man began to struggle inside the store around 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
Nunn says the man attempted to get the officerâs service weapon and it discharged during the struggle.
He says no one was hit by the gunshot.

The shooting happened when a man tried to grab the officer s handgun and it fired inside the store.
