This summer, Young, 36, will be a first-time college student, compliments of a state program designed for adults like him who ve never attended or completed college.
The Michigan Reconnect program, launched in February by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, allows state residents age 25 and older to attend local community colleges tuition-free, as long as they have a high school diploma or equivalent and didn’t already graduate from college.
It took Young an hour to fill out the application, and a few days later he was accepted to Henry Ford College in Dearborn, a mile from his house.

LANSING â A Manton student has been recognized for their academic achievement at Northwestern Michigan College and named to the stateâs Academic Team within Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for high-achieving college students.
Alexandra Swainston was one of 75 Michigan community college students to be made a part for the national honor society.
âMichiganâs community colleges are proud to have 75 outstanding students joining the Phi Theta Kappa All-Michigan Academic Team this year,â said Michael Hansen, president of the Michigan Community College Association. âThese impressive students showcase the bright talent that we have at Michiganâs community colleges and I canât wait to see them continue to grow as part of the PTK All-Michigan Academic team.â

ESCANABA The annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards Ceremony, generally held in East Lansing, will be going virtual this year in a series of activities throughout March held by the Michigan Community College Association and Center for Student Success. Student membership into the PTK All-Michigan Team was selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment. The State Academic Teams are a division of the Academic All-American Team for Community, Technical and Junior College Students, an international program sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.
