Chairman Ron Weiser announced Monday the hiring of former Kent GOP executive director and political strategist Paul Cordes to serve as chief of staff of the Michigan Republican Party.

Michigan Senate Republicans voted to reject five of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s appointees to state positions, continuing their effort to force the governor to the negotiating table over her COVID-19 restrictions. Lansing Michigan Senate Republicans demanded Wednesday that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer work more closely with lawmakers on responding to COVID-19 before blocking a second slate of her appointees.
The GOP-controlled Senate voted along party lines, 20-14, to reject five of the Democratic governor s appointees, another sign of the deteriorating relationship between the legislative and executive branches during the pandemic. A week earlier, the Senate nixed 13 of Whitmer s appointees.
Before the Wednesday vote, Sen. Aric Nesbitt, R-Lawton, said the Senate was using its power to pressure Whitmer to compromise with the people s representatives. GOP lawmakers want the governor to ease restrictions on businesses and school athletics more quickly.
Shirkey-tied nonprofit gives $550,000 to Unlock Michigan campaign
Lansing A nonprofit organization tied to Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey gave $550,000 to the campaign to repeal a Michigan law that allowed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to issue unilateral executive orders to combat COVID-19.

My Michigan!, a social welfare organization that formed in August 2018 and doesn t have to disclose its donors, is now the second largest funder of Unlock Michigan, the petition campaign to repeal the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act, according to a fundraising report due Monday.
