PEOPLE OF THE LIE: The Michigan Republicans who tried to overturn the election

People of the lie: The Michigan Republicans who tried to overturn the election Detroit Free Press Editorial Board, Detroit Free Press © handout U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain and U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg. It began with an outrageous lie: Donald Trump s baseless assertion that election officials in Michigan and other battleground states had conspired to conceal his landslide re-election victory. Over the next two months, 28 of Michigan s most prominent Republicans federal and state lawmakers, appointed officials and party leaders  waged an unprecedented campaign to overturn the election results. They worked tirelessly to amplify and embroider Trump s false claims, persisting even as judges, state legislatures, election officials and law enforcement authorities debunked those allegations again and again.

Leaders renounce US Capitol riot: This is happening because of lies

The mob disrupted what is traditionally a routine proceeding: a joint session of Congress where Electoral College votes are read and accepted.  Instead, moments into the proceeding, hundreds of violent actors broke into the Capitol, at times attacking law enforcement officers. The riot came hours after Trump spoke at a rally in Washington, D.C., where he continued to spread lies that the election was somehow rigged or stolen.  This is happening because of lies. That is why this is happening, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson tweeted.

Michigan Senate Leader Shirkey: No interest in running for governor

Michigan Senate Leader Shirkey: No interest in running for governor Lansing Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said he has no interest and no plans to run in 2022 as the Republican alternative to Democratic Gov. Grechen Whitmer, who is expected to seek reelection. In a Thursday interview, as state GOP officials and activists have begun focusing on the coming gubernatorial race, Shirkey, R-Clarklake, rebuffed speculation that he would seek to be the nominee. The statement makes him the first of the rumored contenders to do so publicly since the presidential election on Nov. 3. I have no interest and no plans for running for governor in 2022 or beyond, said Shirkey, a conservative businessman who has served in the state House and Senate.

Part 2: Deniers and shitheads click to enlarge Welcome to Part 2 of the Worst People of the Worst Year Ever (who aren t named Trump). In part 1, we lifted our leg on the seditionists who undermined democracy and the authoritarians who made a mockery of the constitution. To cap off our rogues gallery, this installment raises a glass (of antifreeze) to the criminally negligent COVID deniers and a potpourri of shitheads we d just as soon drop off the face of the earth. Group 3. Deniers DR. SCOTT ATLAS. Few people provided pseudo-scientific cover for Donald Trump s sociopathic indifference to the pandemic like Atlas, a radiologist who fell into Trump s orbit via (what else) appearances on Fox News and eventually became his special COVID adviser by telling Trump what he wanted to hear herd immunity, open everything, masks don t work, etc. Atlas had no training in infectious diseases or public health, yet th
