Census Official On Latest Michigan Count

April 28, 2021 Michigan will lose one seat in the U.S. House of Representatives as a result of our slow population growth. U.S. Census officials announced yesterday Michigan saw a 2% gain in residents over the past ten years bringing the total number of to just more than ten million. Vickie Kovari, who ran the Detroit 2020 Census Campaign, told Michigan News Network the loss shouldn’t affect federal funding. “It does not impact the federal funding we get,” Kovari said. “That’s based on the population total, and so that will be a different story, in terms of the impact it will have on federal funding.”

Michigan Losing One Congressional Seat, Dingell Weighs In

April 28, 2021 Michigan’s slow population growth over the past decade will cost the state a U.S. House seat, continuing a decades-long trend as job-seekers and retirees have moved to other states. The U.S. Census Bureau listed the state’s 2020 apportionment population at just under 10.1 million, leaving Michigan with 13 congressional seats. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell told Michigan News Network this week it’s disappointing that Michigan will lose one more seat in Washington. “It means that we will have fewer people representing the state, which affects appropriations for many of the programs that we care about, making sure that Michigan has a voice,” Dingell said.

Communities Having Trouble Filling Summer Jobs

Cities around Michigan are having a hard time filling seasonal jobs for the summer. Port Huron City Manager James Freed told Michigan News Network this week in his community they need people to handle jobs in parks and recreation and mowing the lawn in the cemetery. “Candidly, it’s because everybody’s off on unemployment.” Freed said. “We can’t get people to come back and work for $12 an hour when they’re getting such good unemployment benefits right now.” Freed says these summer jobs often lead to full time jobs with the city. He notes they’re even having trouble finding high school students looking for part-time work this year.
