DNR rules out poison for numerous swan deaths in Waterford Township
By FOX 2 Staff
FOX 2 - Michigan DNR biologists confirmed that a disease caused by a parasitic flatworm killed three mute swans found dead earlier this year, near Maceday Lake in Waterford Township.
Since January, Department of Natural Resource conservation officers retrieved eight dead mute swans from the lake, according to a release. Concerned residents told FOX 2 they questioned whether the swans were ingesting antifreeze or another form of poison.

MARQUETTE A series of free upcoming webinars will explore key aspects of building with mass timber, from meeting codes to the challenges of using hardwoods when making mass timber.
Mass timber construction allows for building large and tall structures using engineered wood. Mass timber construction often goes up faster than traditional construction and uses renewable materials.
The series is an outgrowth of Michigan’s recent Mass Timber Summit, a virtual meeting that took place last fall and was co-hosted by the Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. All of the webinars are hosted by MIFBI.
Mi Environment - Today s MiCorps story is the first of two that looks at this volunter program that collects important information needed to make data-driven decisions about how to protect and improve Michigan s beautiful lakes and streams.
Biologists reeled in a 240-pound fish from the Detroit River that probably hatched a century ago Paulina Firozi A member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey crew lays beside a 240-pound lake sturgeon pulled from the Detroit River. (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) Jason Fischer was shocked at what his crew had just caught. Fischer, a biologist who works with a Michigan-based Fish and Wildlife Service office, was on the water late last month, putting out setlines with hooks to catch and survey the lake sturgeon population in the Detroit River. It was his first setline survey with this three-person crew, and until then his research had focused on egg and larval stages “we’re talking about a fish less than an inch.”
