ALPENA With temperatures inching upward and snow melting, Michiganders are beginning to make plans for summer nights around a campfire, according to reservation numbers at Michigan state park campgrounds.
Camping reservations are up by 15% over this time last year, when people were beginning to worry whether they would be able to take their summer vacation, according to Eric Ostrander, unit supervisor for Harrisville and Negwegon state parks.
Last summer, when state parks reopened in late June after a spring shut-down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, campsites and day-use areas filled with campers.

LANSING, MICH. Women looking to learn new outdoor skills can find free workshops hosted on Instagram by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources this month.
During the next several weeks, the DNR’s popular Becoming an Outdoorswoman (BOW) programing will hold a variety of outdoors skills classes over Instagram Live, with topics including beginner snowshoeing, turkey hunting, fire-starting basics, fly fishing, and wilderness backpack preparation.
Michigan forest fuelwood permits available now at no cost
For the second year in a row, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will offer free permits to cut fuelwood from dead and downed trees in approved areas of Michigan’s state forests.
This year, fuelwood season begins today, March 1 – earlier than in previous years to help people who might be facing economic hardship during the heating season due to COVID-19.
“We are trying to make the permit process as simple and effective as possible,” said Jeff Stampfly, chief of the DNR’s Forest Resources Division.
Like last year, residents need to use an online permit which can be found at Michigan.gov/Fuelwood. First, use the Fuelwood Map button to locate the township and range where you would like to collect. Then, use the Fuelwood Permit button to bring up a fillable pdf. Complete the form, enter the township and range of the map that you will be using (for example, T22N, R09W), and then print, sign and carry it with

For those that heat the house with wood, permits are now available.
If you are in need of fuelwood for your home, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources now has permits available for you to gather dead and downed trees in certain areas of Michigan s state forests. This will mark the second year in a row that the Department of Natural Resources will be supplying those permits for free to help those who might be facing economic hardship due to COVID-19.
Permits can be acquired online at michigan.gov/fuelwood. If you are interested, you will first want to locate an area that you would like to collect from using the Fuelwood Map button. Next, complete the forms using the Fuelwood Permit button. When you re finished you simply print, sign, and carry the permit with you when you are out collecting your fuelwood.
