According to Bay Port Fish Company Co-Owner Lakon Williams, the business received the fisheries order update Feb. 11.

Feb 13, 2021 The application period for the Upper Peninsula’s Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative competitive grant program opened Jan 28, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced. The initiative is a cooperative grant program designed to enhance deer habitat on private lands in the U.P. “There are three primary goals applicants should strive to meet,” said Bill Scullon, DNR field operations manager and administrator for the grant initiative. “The projects should produce tangible deer habitat improvements, build long-term partnerships between the DNR and outside organizations and showcase the benefits of the project to the public.” Now in its 13th year, the initiative is supported by the state’s Deer Range Improvement Program, which is funded by a portion of deer hunting license revenue. The program has invested over $750,000 in hunter license dollars on U.P. deer habitat enhancements.

I wonder if they are happy to be there fishing or wishing they were someplace else? Has heaven forsaken them, leaving them here instead? Is there a place in these wilds where they too call home? Wispy like mist, they float over the water or gather at the base of a tree trunk to sleep. Shrinking like vampires, they disappear in the sunlight, but they’ll be back on another rainy day.

Local law enforcement on patrol looking for snowmobile violations

Cheboygan Daily Tribune More and more people are getting outside and riding their snowmobiles as the temperatures drop and more snow hits the ground, creating a better surface on which to ride the machines. Local law enforcement, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Cheboygan County Sheriff s Department,Tuscarora Township Police Department and Mackinaw City Police Department are all out patrolling the trails, making sure people are obeying the law. This season started with a bang, said Sgt. Mark DePew, area law supervisor for Otsego and Cheboygan counties with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Gaylord Operations Center. DePew said at the beginning of the winter, when the first snow hit, people really came out and started snowmobiling. But, the little bit of a warm up hit and things started to slow down as trail conditions really deteriorated.
