LANSING, MI - James E. White, Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and Stacie Clayton, Chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, have issued the following statements in response to the killing of eight people in Georgia on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.

White, Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights: The senseless murder of eight people in Georgia yesterday, among them six Korean American women, is a profound and unconscionable tragedy. While investigators sort out the motives behind such a heinous act, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights stands in sympathy and solidarity with our Asian American friends, neighbors and family members. Representatives from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) called their meeting with Hartland Consolidated Schoolsâ administrators a âpositive first step.â
Two weeks ago 18-year old senior Tatayana Vanderlaan, a young woman of color, posted on social media several instances of racial abuse and discrimination she said were made her by fellow students. She also claimed that in at least one instance a teacher had heard it happen and, did nothing. In the aftermath of her social media post, Vanderlaan says she received several threats from other students, including that she should be lynched . The Livingston County Sheriffâs Office is conducting an investigation of those threats.
