After more than 26 years in prison, a Detroit man was freed Thursday when a judge tossed out his conviction after deeming the trial was unreliable and unfair.
DETROIT - A Detroit man who has spent 26 years in prison for murder will be released after authorities concluded that testimony at his 1994 trial was unreliable.
Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy won’t call it an exoneration for Larry D. Smith. But she said she’s very certain that the trial process was not just.

ESCANABA As of Tuesday, the U.P. had 15,955 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 3,879 probable cases (an increase of 12 cases in the last 24 hours), 369 deaths and 88 probable deaths linked to the disease, according to state officials.
The figure does not include prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
According to the state’s county-by-county count issued Tuesday, Delta County had a total of 2,615 confirmed COVID-19 cases (unchanged), 458 probable cases, 63 deaths and 19 probable deaths; Menominee County had 1,593 confirmed cases (an increase of one case), 256 probable cases (an increase of one case), 33 deaths and two probable deaths; Schoolcraft County had 227 confirmed cases, 24 probable cases, four deaths and one probable death.

MANISTIQUE An Escanaba man and a Manistique woman were recently sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for delivery of methamphetamine.
John Allen Tilot, age 36 of Escanaba, was sentenced in Schoolcraft County Circuit Court on Jan. 21 to a minimum of three years to a maximum of 20 years for a delivery of methamphetamine that occurred in the city of Manistique in October of 2020. At the time of the offense, Tilot was on parole with the Michigan Department of Corrections, and the sentence handed down on Jan. 21 will be served consecutively.
Also sentenced on Jan. 21 was Angie Jean Gwaltney, age 29 of Manistique, who was sentenced to a minimum of 14 months to a maximum of 20 years in prison for delivery of methamphetamine. Gwaltney’s case was related to an incident that occurred in the city of Manistique in June of 2020.

BAY CITY, MI A Bay City man is facing a life offense for allegedly robbing a pharmacy in broad daylight.
Bay County District Judge Timothy J. Kelly on Tuesday, Feb. 2, arraigned 62-year-old Brian L. Bleicher on single counts of armed robbery, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, and carrying a concealed weapon. The most serious charge, armed robbery, is punishable by up to life in prison.
