Dec 31, 2020 ESCANABA As of Wednesday, the U.P. had 14,255 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 3,281 probable cases, 324 deaths and 73 probable deaths linked to the disease, according to state officials. The figure does not include prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections. According to the state’s county-by-county count issued Wednesday, Delta County had a total of 2,474 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 415 probable cases, 60 deaths and 17 probable deaths; Menominee County had 1,451 confirmed cases, 238 probable cases, 25 deaths and zero probable deaths; Schoolcraft County had 210 confirmed cases, 19 probable cases, three deaths and one probable death. Elsewhere in the peninsula, Alger County had 190 confirmed cases, 129 probable cases, one death and one probable death; Baraga County had 459 confirmed cases, 86 probable cases, 28 deaths and zero probable deaths; Chippewa County had 556 confirmed cases, 829 probable cases, 12 deaths and two probable deaths; Dickinson County had 1

KINCHELOE, MI    The health unit manager at the Kinross Correctional Facility became the first Michigan Department of Corrections employee to receive the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine today. Cindi Jenkins, who has worked for the department for 30 years, received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie at 7:45 a.m. Jenkins said once she learned the vaccine would soon be available to her and her staff, she did her research and consulted her medical provider, but in the end, it was a “no-brainer.” “I’m a nurse. I believe in science. I believe vaccines save lives,” Jenkins said. “I have full faith in the medical community and science and research.”

First Michigan corrections employee given COVID-19 vaccine The Michigan Department of Corrections, which accounts for one-quarter of the state government work force, had its first employee vaccinated against COVID-19 on Wednesday. Cindi Jenkins, a health unit manager at the Kinross Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula and a 30-year veteran of the department, received the Pfizer-BioNTech version of the vaccine about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, the corrections department said.  Kinross was the first prison in Michigan to have a COVID case, and then had an outbreak in November where 80% of the inmates there tested positive, along with 119 employees. Half of the health care team also caught the virus.
