Michigan prison system s UK variant cases more than triple

MDOC continues to make up the majority of Michigan s known B.1.1.7 cases. There were 422 cases across the state as of Thursday, according to MDHHS. After MDOC, Washtenaw County has the most cases, with 46.  Michigan ranks second nationally for the highest number of B.1.1.7 variant cases behind Florida, which has 500 cases, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  But states have limited capacity to test for the variant. The MDOC cases were detected through a testing regimen that involves daily testing of prisoners and staff. Positive samples are sent to the state lab to sequence for the variant. All prisoners and staff at Bellamy Creek, as well as some prisoners and employees at Duane Waters and Macomb, are tested daily.

State fines 23 employers for COVID violations, including MDOC facility

Sentinel Staff LANSING The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspected and issued COVID-19 safety citations to 23 different workplaces with violations, the state announced Friday. Michigan adds 1,156 cases, 68 deaths from COVID-19

Feb 27, 2021 ESCANABA As of Friday, the U.P. had 16,398 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (up ten cases from Thursday), 4,027 probable cases, 384 deaths and 93 probable deaths linked to the disease, according to state officials. The figure does not include prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections. According to the state’s county-by-county count issued Friday, Delta County had a total of 2,650 confirmed COVID-19 cases (unchanged), 476 probable cases (an increase of one probable case from Thursday), 65 deaths and 19 probable deaths; Menominee County had 1,615 confirmed cases (unchanged), 263 probable cases (an increase of one probable case from Thursday), 35 deaths and two probable deaths; Schoolcraft County had 231 confirmed cases (an increase of two cases from Thursday), 28 probable cases, four deaths and one probable death.

Among the details in the citation, MIOSHA found:  Five corrections officers tested positive for the coronavirus between April 17 and May 6. The first officer who tested positive told a member of the MDOC’s contact tracing team of a positive test result on April 20. The officer was not interviewed to identify close contacts. Those five officers and two other employees ate lunch together regularly in a breakroom but were not identified as close contacts to the first officer who tested positive. “Since they were not identified as close contacts, they were not required to self-quarantine at home for 14 days, thus potentially exposing employees to SARS-CoV-2 virus.
