Some experts say yes Pete Williams © Provided by NBC News WASHINGTON Some legal experts on the congressional power of impeachment believe President Donald Trump could be impeached and tried in the Senate even after he leaves office at noon on Jan. 20. The House can bring an impeachment resolution to the floor for an immediate vote, bypassing the process of committee hearings, which were held when Trump was impeached in 2019 and acquitted in the GOP-controlled Senate. Report: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests shot up in early phase of COVID pandemic

Credit Steve Carmody / Michigan Radio Cardiac arrests outside of hospitals went up by 60% during the first 10 weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic over the same period the year before. And there was a 42% jump in deaths from cardiac arrests in the pre-hospital setting. These were some of the findings of a study of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest records of the Emergency Service Information System in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties from March 23 through May 31, 2020.  Adam Oostema, M.D and associate professor of emergency medicine in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, co-authored the study. Oostema said the rise in cardiac arrests and related deaths outside of hospitals is probably due to factors directly and indirectly related to COVID-19.

Is invoking the 25th Amendment better than impeaching Trump?

Following Donald Trump’s incitement of insurrection on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25 th Amendment. Other Democratic lawmakers and, to a lesser extent, Republicans have echoed Schumer’s demand, arguing that Trump must be removed from office immediately. Some politicians most notably Chair of the House Democratic Caucus Hakeem Jeffries have taken a more traditional route, demanding Trump’s swift impeachment. There is at least one major benefit to the 25 th Amendment that’s not provided by impeachment: It would immediately sideline the president, transferring his full authority to Pence. But there are a number of drawbacks that make the amendment a potentially dangerous weapon to wield against an unhinged president. To better understand its advantages and risks, I spoke with Michigan State University College of Law professor Brian C. Kalt, who wrote the book on the amendment. Our conversation has been edit
