Michigan wheat crop ahead of schedule
This is the first time that over 50% of the crop in the state has reached Feekes 6 (GS6) stage by the end of April based on NASS s survey responses.

While scouting your wheat fields this season, you might be under the impression that your wheat is growing faster than last year. Guess what? You are correct. According to the latest wheat watchers report from April 26, 2021, many watchers have reported wheat at or above the Feekes 6 growth stage (jointing). To give you some perspective, in Lenawee and Monroe counties in southeast Michigan, we found wheat at the jointing stage back on April 16.
Virtual Crop Scout School now offered
The 2021 Virtual Crop Scout School for corn, soybeans, small grains and alfalfa is available now and free to the general public.
Michigan State University Extension teamed up with crop protection specialists at 11 Midwest universities to offer a Virtual Crop Scout School. The school consists of 22 webinars covering general scouting, agronomics, disease, insects and weeds for corn, soybean, small grains and alfalfa. The webinars range from 20-30 minutes, and many include downloadable slides. This is an excellent opportunity to brush up on scouting and identification skills before the pest season starts.

Views like this of Platte Lake, Lake Michigan, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes are the reason the National Park Service has slowly been acquiring land for a scenic road in Benzie County.
If you look at Benzie County on Google Maps, you’ll notice a dark green strip of land about five miles long between Platte Lake and Crystal Lake.
That’s where a long-proposed scenic road would run – between U.S. Highway 31 and M-22 – taking people from Beulah into Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The land is mostly dense hardwood forest and it s extremely hilly.
“This is almost a 90-degree descent here we’re going to go down here, so we may want to keep our hands free,” says Andy Norman, a retiree of Michigan State University Extension who lives nearby.

His great-grandfather owned a bakery in Butler, Missouri. His mother, Catherine, often had Dominic right by her side when she baked at home.
Now, Dominic, 16, of Okemos, has launched his own baking service: Baked Goods by Dominic.

Dominic, who has autism and is non-verbal, started the business amid the pandemic, after his speech therapist recommended he start baking, Catherine Blatnik said. Dominic started baking, delivering the items to his speech therapist and she would pay him.
