House fire in Benton Harbor leaves one person dead By: Maura Johnson BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – One person has died following a house fire in Benton Harbor Monday evening, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reported. At 6:49 p.m., the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety was called to a house fire in the 1100 block of McAlister Ave. in Benton Harbor. Upon arriving, safety officers saw heavy smoke coming from the downstairs apartment and heavy flames coming from the rear of the building. Bystanders told firefighters there was at least one person in the downstairs apartment, reports said. Both BHDPS and the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety made their way into the lower apartment and found a woman inside.

Woman Dies After Benton Harbor Fire

May 4, 2021 One woman has died after a house fire in McAlister in Benton Harbor Monday night. Public safety was called to the home in the 11-hundred block a few minutes before 7 p.m. and noticed heavy smoke and flames from the downstairs apartment. Benton Harbor and St. Joseph officers found the woman on the first floor after being told by witnesses there was still someone inside and she was rushed to an ambulance. She died at Spectrum Health Lakeland around 9:40 pm. Investigators say they don’t yet know the cause of the blaze but the Michigan State Police Fire Investigators, assisted by BHDPS Fire Marshal, are still working on it. The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
