Moderate to low-income housing for seniors set to open in Ishpeming soon

Moderate to low-income housing for seniors set to open in Ishpeming soon ISHPEMING A moderate to low–income housing project for seniors is nearing completion, and is accepting lease applications. Jasperlite Senior Housing is set to open within the next two months, creating affordable housing for seniors in the area. The project has been funded by low–income housing tax credits through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Located in Ishpeming, the project helps fill a need in the community. “The owners also have other communities in the area,” said Kelly Beach, Regional Property Manager. “As they were developing those communities, they could see there was a need for senior housing in this area. We have almost 200 names on our prospect list, and we’ve secured probably 80 applications so far. So I think there’s still going to be a need, even once we fill this building.”

I refuse to give up on it

CADILLAC — Cadillac Castle, a proposed low-income apartment building for seniors that would be constructed on South Mitchell Street, has earned an extension. The proposed project has three times failed to be awarded tax credits via the Michigan State Housing Development Authority s administration of federal dollars. But developer Phil Seybert is going to try for a fourth time to earn the credits that would make the project financially work. I refuse to give up on it, Seybert told city council during council s January meeting on Tuesday night. The fourth application is due Feb. 1 and Seybert has reason to hope that the fourth attempt will be the one that finally works, as the state is setting aside 12.5% for rural housing. That should mean Cadillac won t have to compete with Detroit or Grand Rapids.

A Look at the Progress in Battle Creek s Latest Makeover

40 years ago, the Stouffer Battle Creek Hotel opened, and was the centerpiece of a spurt of downtown development that hasn’t been seen, until recently.  Back then, Bob Miller, Sr., publisher of the Battle Creek Enquirer had just retired and set his sights on working, through the Miller Foundation and the community to update Battle Creek’s downtown.  Voters approved a merger of the city and Battle Creek Township, Kellogg built a world headquarters, and soon the W.K. Kellogg Foundation would build a new downtown headquarters.  Many old buildings were sacrificed, as the downtown took on a very different look.   Since then, there have been a few projects, but momentum toward another makeover has been steadily building.  One of the chief players in that effort has been Battle Creek Unlimited.  (BCU).
