BPU Board passes resolution to raise electric rates

By Jim Measel Jul 7, 2021 | 7:49 PM COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Board of Directors approved the utility’s first increase in electric rates since April 2019 on Wednesday night. A power point presentation from Mark Beauchamp of Utility Financial Solutions discussed an annual overall electric rate increase of two percent for each of the next three years. He said Coldwater has kept up with its rates for the last 20 years so the adjustments have been small. Beauchamp said, “nobody likes rate adjustments…customers rather see small periodic rate adjustments rather than hold them off  and have them in a large adjustment.”

Michigan Utility Phasing Out Coal By 2025

Consumers Energy has announced it will phase out all coal power by 2025. Spokesperson Josh Piorcek tells WSJM News the plan will be good for the environment and customers. “Under today’s plan that we announced, we do expect our customers will save in total about $650 million between now and 2040,” Piorcek said. Piorcek says the Consumers Energy plan makes it the first large electricity provider to drop coal completely. “Right now, we have about 19% of our energy coming from coal. So by 2025, we’re going to eliminate that and to replace it, we’re going to purchase four natural gas plants.”
