Ripton’s choice to withdrawal its elementary school from the Addison Central Supervisory Union should be just that: the town’s choice.
On Jan. 12 this year, town residents voted 163-107 to withdraw from the school district and become an independent school. After a two-year discussion and a full-on push throughout this past year of advocating to keep its school open residents there have taken this action with eyes wide open.
Is there risk? Absolutely. Could town taxpayers have to pay a little more in taxes to keep their elementary school open? Yes. Taxes for Ripton residents are projected to go up slightly, though because tax rebates are most often based on income the law will shield the lowest income residents from most increases. Taxes for district residents in the other six towns, meanwhile, are projected to go down slightly if Ripton withdraws.
BARB WILSON
MIDDLEBURY One could certainly argue that it takes a brave person these days to serve on the Addison Central School District (ACSD) board. Plenty of controversial issues in play are bound to make board members unpopular with some of their constituents.

Transitioning to a brand-new learning structure through the International Baccalaureate program.

MIDDLEBURY A group of 70 Middlebury Union Middle School students will be studying remotely this entire week in light of a recent, positive COVID-19 test confirmed among the MUMS community.
“Led by ACSD’s COVID-19 Coordinator Kelly Landwehr, we met with necessary members of school to help us with contact tracing and make decisions on how to best support our continuity of learning,” reads an email sent to the MUMS community this past weekend by Andrew Conforti, MUMS principal. “We are confident that we ve shared all critical information related to this positive case.”
It was a member of the school’s “Phoenix” team that recorded the positive test, according to school officials.

Middlebury building served as inspiration for Houghton’s recent digital sculpture “Attack on the Town Hall Theater” where Godzilla-like otters crush the beloved building.

Downtown Middlebury is all decked out in holiday spirit, but have you noticed the sculpture in the window of the National Bank of Middlebury?
“It’s not a wreath, it’s not lights and it’s not a tree,” said sculptor Daniel Houghton, who is Animation Studio Producer at Middlebury College. “But it seems right at home in a holiday window.”
