Dog kills 3-year-old boy, attacks mother in Carteret backyard
CARTERET A 3-year-old boy was killed and his mother seriously injured after they were attacked by two unregistered pit bulls on Tuesday afternoon.
The victims were in the backyard of their Laurel Street home about 4:30 p.m. when the attack occurred, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone. Mayor Dan Reiman said the dogs came from a residence on adjacent Birch Street. The dogs were not registered with the borough as required by municipal law, according to Reiman, who said the dogs have been euthanized.
The mayor said the victims were hospitalized via medical helicopter. The boy s mother remained in the hospital on Wednesday morning.
Teens charged with murder in North Brunswick shooting
One of the teens is in custody while the other remains a fugitive
Mark Atkins, an 18-year-old from Plainfield died in the hospital after being shot multiple times Wednesday at the Renaissance Glen Apartments off Route 130. A 17-year-old was struck once by gunfire and survived.
Ciccone said two 17-year-olds from North Brunswick were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
The prosecutor did not reveal the circumstances of the shooting. The teens have not been identified because they are underage.
A message on the Plainfield school district website said Atkins was a former Plainfield High School student and the district sent sincere condolences and prayers to his parents. A spokeswoman for the district had no additional comment.

A 19-year-old man was charged Friday in a shooting that killed two men - including one celebrating his birthday - and left seven other people hurt at a New Brunswick party, authorities said.
Jeron Pitt, of Somerset, faces two counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder, along with conspiracy and weapons charges, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
