Stockton Council leader Bob Cook has written to supermarkets in the borough to remind them of their responsibilities to help stop the spread of covid-19. Councillor Cook also said the local authority’s ‘covid marshals’ were offering support to shops and businesses and the early feedback was that this had been “well received”. Last week Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said its public protection officers would be inspecting supermarkets, convenience stores and other food retailers in the town in order to check safety standards were being maintained. Previously Mr Preston had called for supermarkets to “get their act together” after conducting his own impromptu survey of stores and singling out a number as not doing enough to limit the risk to staff and customers from the coronavirus.
