The meeting, which will be held virtually by teleconference, is scheduled for 5 p.m. In his comments in the agenda, Joe Graves, superintendent for the Mitchell School District, noted that at 52 years old, the intercom, bells and clock system at Mitchell Middle School can no longer be repaired reliably or in a cost-effective manner. The school could use a new digital system, Graves said.

Billionaire MacKenzie Scott donates $1 5 million to Meals on Wheels

Tanya Manus Journal staff Christmas came early for Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota when it received $1.5 million from author, philanthropist and billionaire MacKenzie Scott. The gift will allow Meals on Wheels to replace aging kitchen equipment and potentially serve more people and communities. The donation is “truly amazing,” George Larson, executive director of Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota, said Thursday. Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota delivers meals in Pennington, Perkins, Butte, Meade, Custer, Fall River, Ziebach and Dewey counties. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with colder weather, Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota experienced a 39% increase in clients in November. Larson said the organization currently receives an average 25 new sign-ups each week.

Lake Area Technical College Receives Significant Impact Gift from Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott

South Dakota’s nationally recognized colleges Lake Area Technical College of Watertown and Mitchell Technical College of Mitchell say they are honored to be the recipients of significant impact gifts from philanthropist and popular novelist, MacKenzie Scott.   The announcement, made through social media, states that 384 organizations including Lake Area Technical College and Mitchell Technical College received generous donations to assist in continuing the good work they are already doing.  The colleges will be using the donation to support transformative initiatives that will remove barriers for students and allow them the success everyone deserves.
