As the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination in Louth nursing homes got under way last week, 85-year-old John Monaghan, from Hunterstown Ardee, was the first person in a Louth nursing home receive the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. I feel very privileged to be the first person in St Joseph s Hospital to receive the vaccine, said John. Like everyone else I have been waiting for the vaccine. It s a great relief that the vaccine is eventually here and it provides hope for us all, especially the vulnerable, that we will be safe from Covid-19 and that our lives will return to normal.

There is huge relief amongst the residents and staff of a HSE Laois nursing home with the start of Covid-19 vaccinations this week.
Sylvia Mathews, a 102-year-old woman from Portarlington, was the first person in a Laois nursing home to be vaccinated against COVID-19 a week after the staff at Portlaoise hospital received the first vaccines delivered in the county.
Sylvia’s vaccine was the first Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine to be administered by vaccinators at the HSE St Vincent s Community Nursing Unit in Mountmellick on Thursday, January 14.

Catherine Gerety has become the first person in a Longford nursing home to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
Catherine’s vaccine was the first Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 Vaccine to be administered by vaccinators at Thomond Lodge Nursing Home, Ballymahon, Co Longford on Wednesday, January 13.
Catherine said, “I feel privileged to have been given the vaccine. I would ask everybody to please follow guidelines so that I can go home and see my family very soon. I have kept in touch on zoom and with many telephone calls. I would like to thank all of the staff who cared for us all. Even when things got hard, they always supported us.”
