(Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association) The Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association (MN Bio-Fuels) and Chippewa Valley Ethanol Company (CVEC) hosted virtual plant visits for two classes at Benson High School on March 4.
During the plant visits, the students, from grades 9 to 12, were given a virtual presentation on the plant’s operations, facts on the ethanol industry and a video on the ethanol production process.
“Corn is a solar panel – it takes in sunlight, moisture and CO2 and creates energy. We take that energy and convert it back into something that consumers can use. At the end of the day, we break that energy out, we put CO2 and water vapor back out and recycle it to produce more ethanol – this is the renewable energy cycle.

The Governor’s Biofuels Coalition is asking President Joe Biden to ensure the future of the biofuels sector. Coalition Chair and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says the biofuels industry is now in jeopardy and threatened by trade wars, a litigious petroleum industry and shrinking demand caused by the pandemic. Minnesota Biofuels Association Executive Director Tim Rudnicki says Governor Walz is reminding the President of how renewable fuels benefit the environment as well as the economy.
Walz in his letter told the President that banning aromatics use would allow for the substitution of cleaner octane additives for aromatics and expanding the market for ethanol. Rudnicki says banning those aromatics would be a helpful move.
by Timothy J. Rudnicki (Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association) In the past few weeks, we have been working with state lawmakers to advance a bill that would provide partial funding for fuel retailers to make the necessary infrastructure upgrades to offer E15. This initiative holds the potential to strengthen market signals to speed the adoption of E15 in Minnesota.
Let’s be clear, MN Bio-Fuels has long held the position that it is the duty and obligation of the petroleum industry to provide the necessary fueling systems to offer at least E15 to Minnesotans.
But 13 years after the RFS and the Minnesota Petroleum Replacement Law (which calls for 30 percent biofuel by 2025) and the availability of E15 for eight years, only 10 percent of fuel retailers offer E15.
