Up to now, Tunheim said in an email exchange, the court has been limited to virtual bench trials. The court does not have authority under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to conduct remote criminal jury trials, but it can proceed with civil virtual jury trials.
Monday’s trial will be the first time it has done so. “We are hoping this works well so it gives us an option to conduct civil trials during the pandemic,” Tunheim said. The chief judge will preside over the trial.

ST. PAUL A North Dakota-based snack company claims a former executive wrongfully took more than $1 million from the business, more than initially alleged in a civil suit filed in early October.
An amended complaint filed by Giants Snacks in late October in Minnesota U.S. District Court alleged Lucy Spiekermeier stole or misappropriated $1,669,267 by writing checks to herself and another unnamed person. The business in Wahpeton, N.D., also claimed she wrongfully reimbursed herself and used company funds to pay a student loan while she worked for Giants as a treasurer and secretary.
