Budget Deal Reached But Special Session Is Needed

By Dave Strandberg May 17, 2021 | 11:04 AM ST. PAUL, MN (MNN) – Governor Tim Walz, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka and House Speaker Melissa Hortman late Monday morning announced an agreement on Minnesota’s roughly 52-billion-dollar budget, 13 hours before the midnight deadline for the legislature to adjourn. It’s basically impossible for lawmakers to finish details of the budget, so a special session is likely. Hortman says the budget would possibly wrap up by June 14th that’s when lawmakers would have to be back anyway to vote on the governor’s COVID emergency powers. On the biggest issue, Hortman indicates the legislature and governor would share responsibility for parceling out some of the billions in federal COVID aid, but in some areas Walz would have sole jurisdiction.

3 Step Plan To End Minnesota COVID Restrictions

By Dave Strandberg May 6, 2021 11:25 AM ST. PAUL, MN (MNN) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Thursday announced a three-step plan for ending COVID-related restrictions in the state. Walz says limits on indoor and outdoor gatherings will be eased starting Friday with a goal of outdoor limits ending and indoor limits being curbed on May 28th. In addition, Walz is aiming to end the mask mandate on July 1st–or sooner–if 70% of Minnesotans are vaccinated. Walz says: “Our nation-leading vaccination effort has put us in a strong position to safely transition toward life as we used to know it and as cases recede, more people get vaccinated and vaccines are readily available to all who want it, we can confidently and safely set out our path back to normal.”
