MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin spent his first night in prison since his conviction for murdering George Floyd segregated from the other inmates, a Minnesota Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Chauvin, found guilty Tuesday in connection with Floyd’s death on May 25, is being housed under “administrative segregation” status for his own safety at the Oak Park Heights Prison until sentencing in June, said agency spokeswoman Sarah Fitzgerald.

Derek Chauvin is awaiting sentencing for the murder of George Floyd in a special unit in Minnesota’s only maximum security prison.
On Tuesday, the former officer was found guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death.
Chauvin is being held in the Administrative Control Unit (ACU) at the Minnesota Correctional Facility Oak Park Heights, which means he’s in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, HuffPost reported.

The US Justice Department (DOJ) has launched a federal investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department s practices in the wake of former police officer Derek Chauvin being found guilty for killing George Floyd.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the investigation during a briefing on Wednesday, a day after Chauvin, a white police officer, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in the May 2020 death of Floyd, an unarmed black man, after putting his knee on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
