A group created to foster the financial independence of north Minneapolis residents has revived an effort to create the first Black-led credit union on the North Side.
The Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP) has brought on new staff and board members to bring to fruition Village Financial Cooperative and is seeking $6 million from the city to get it off the ground. The credit union has the potential to be a source of hope, a source of pride, and just a new beginning, said Debra Hurston, ABEP s new executive director. And I just think the community deserves to know that their original mission has not been abandoned.

Tuesday evening friends and family of a 6-year-old girl shot in Minneapolis just a few weeks ago will gather to remember her and pay their respects.
Shiloh Temple, located at 1201 West Broadway Avenue in Minneapolis will host two visitations, one Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., and a second on Wednesday, June 2, from 9 to 10 a.m. before her funeral service.
A man who worked security for a CNN broadcast team that covered protest and riot activity in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd filed a civil rights lawsuit against two Minnesota State Patrol officers who arrested him during the demonstrations.
My wife and I were driving up I-94 from the Cities recently and saw one of the MN Department of Transportation digital billboards. Its message read something along the lines of Buckle Up, Minnesota. Seatbelts Save Lives. My wife turned to me and said, Who doesn t wear their seatbelt still? I don t know anyone that doesn t wear a seatbelt. As I thought about it I realized that I, too, don t know anyone who doesn t wear a seatbelt. Which begs the question
who s not wearing their seatbelt?
On Monday, May 24 the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and Minnesota law enforcement kicked off a two-week campaign cracking down on seatbelt violations. Extra seat belt patrols begin statewide as unbelted traffic deaths increase, MN Traffic Safety posted on Twitter.
