A woman who identified herself as Wright s mother, according to a Facebook Live video, said her son was pulled over because of air fresheners hanging in his rearview mirror. Police in Brooklyn Center said in a statement the driver they pulled over had an outstanding warrant and got back into the vehicle when they tried to take him into custody.
Police responded Sunday with riot gear as demonstrators gathered in the city, mourning Wright s death. Video posted to Twitter showed police firing gas and a chemical agent at protesters who gathered at the police department Sunday night.
Early Monday, Humvees, construction vehicles and police surrounded the building with graffiti on the department sign and debris littered about.

The police shooting of a Black motorist Sunday brought more grief and turmoil to the Minneapolis area, in the midst of the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin for the alleged murder of George Floyd last year.

A Black man is dead after police shot him during a traffic stop
Daunte Wright, 20, died after being shot by police Sunday in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center. It was not immediately clear whether he was killed by police gunfire, or by an ensuing collision Wright’s vehicle struck another several blocks away moments after police shot him but Wright died at the scene, police said.

The Minnesota National Guard was activated to quell what devolved into violent demonstrations over the fatal officer-involved shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright earlier Sunday in the city of Brooklyn Center, located in Hennepin County on the border of Minneapolis.

A citywide curfew was issued by Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott until 6 a.m. CT Monday. About 500 people had gathered overnight outside of a police precinct in the city and clashed with officers.
