Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police released bodycam video of the deadly Daunte Wright shooting Monday. A police chief in Brooklyn Center outside of Minneapolis released the body camera footage Monday showing the officer-involved shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, categorizing the event as an accidental discharge. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believed the so far unidentified officer intended to reach for a Taser but mistakenly grabbed her service weapon and deployed a single bullet. Both the chief and Mayor Mike Elliott declined to release the officer s name at this time but said the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension should be releasing information about all involved parties soon.

KSTP Created: April 12, 2021 05:56 AM A curfew in Brooklyn Center expired at 6 a.m. Monday and roughly 500 National Guard members have been mobilized following civil unrest after police fatally shot a driver during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon.  Family members identified the man as 20-year-old Daunte Wright. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS talked with Wright s mother, Katie Wright, who said her son called her during that stop and told her he was pulled over because he had air freshener in the rear view mirror.  He said, Mom, they want to know about insurance. I said, When the police officer comes back to the window, put them on the phone and I will give them the insurance information, Katie Wright said. Then I heard the police officer come to window and say, Put the phone down and get out of the car and Daunte said, Why? He said, We ll explain to you when you get out of the car.

The shooting and subsequent unrest in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, came hours before the resumption of the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former white Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd. The trial began its 11th day on Monday in a courtroom less than 10 miles (16 km) away from the incident.

Several businesses in the area have been “completely destroyed,” while rioters clashed with police, according to videos shared on social media. The National Guard has been activated and around 20 businesses have reportedly broken into in the Brooklyn Park area, John Harrington, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said at a press briefing. A reporter for Minnesota’s  Star Tribune, Liz Sawyer, tweeted: “Several businesses around the Brooklyn Center Walmart are completely destroyed. Police rolled up and made some arrests as young men ran from buildings carrying stolen goods. Foot Locker, T Mobile, and a New York men’s clothing store all completely destroyed.”
