Recent trials conducted in downtown Stillwater found the app, called PedNav, was about 95 percent accurate in accessing traffic signal control systems and sending correct auditory and visual messages to tell pedestrians when it was safe to cross the street.

The app remains in the research phase and is unavailable to the public. But its deployment could be a game-changer for anybody with a visual impairment or other condition impacting mobility, said Kate Grathwol, president and CEO of Vision Loss Resources in the Twin Cities.

NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council will discuss moving forward with a fixed route bus service for Brown County, Tuesday. The city is looking at a fixed-route bus service for residents, employees, visitors and students. The city has partnered with Brown County Heartland Express, the transit service provider that operates demand-response service within New Ulm and all of Brown County.

City to be pilot for autonomous vehicles

  The Grand Rapids area could be the first community outside of a metro area in the United States to pilot an autonomous shuttle service program.  The Grand Rapids Shuttle Project partners the city with May Mobility, a company that has been providing cities throughout the country with self-driving vehicles. During a work session Monday, Jan. 25, the Grand Rapids City Council heard an update on the project. As Grand Rapids City Administrator Tom Pagel explained, this project is about more than bringing autonomous vehicles to town but it’s also about workforce development and tourism as well as creating more accessible mobility for those with transportation challenges.
