A Minneapolis police station was swarmed Sunday by protestors after yet another fatal traffic stop. Hours after police fatally shot 20-year-old Black man Daunte Wright in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center, hundreds of protestors gathered, leading police to fire tear gas and the city to implement an overnight curfew.
In the wake of the unrest, businesses at a local mall were left to wonder when their community will see peace, according to a report from the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Tensions remain high in Minneapolis as Derek Chauvin’s trial continues, with some protestors arriving to the scene after a demonstration against police violence. While the protests were mostly peaceful, video captured some at the scene jumping on a squad car and one man attempting to throw a concrete brick. Video also captured many who seemingly were bystanders.
A suburb of Minneapolis was under curfew early yesterday after US police fatally shot a young black man, sparking protests not far from where a former police officer was on trial for the murder of George Floyd.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the police station in Brooklyn Center, northwest of Minneapolis, with police later firing tear gas and flash bangs to disperse the crowd, a video journalist reported.
By about midnight, the National Guard was on the scene and Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott imposed a curfew from 1am until 6am yesterday morning.
“We want to make sure everyone is safe,” Elliott wrote
Police Say ‘Accidental Discharge’ Of Gun Led To Daunte Wright’s Death

Officials in Brooklyn Center, Minn., called the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, the result of an “accidental discharge” of a gun by a police officer.
At a press conference Monday, Brooklyn Center police Chief Tim Gannon played body camera footage of the shooting, saying its circumstances demanded transparency.
“It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,” Gannon said. “This appears to me, from what I’ve viewed and the officer’s reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.”
