The protesters who gather every day to demand justice for George Floyd

“I get up at 5am and I’m usually out here a little after 7am every day,” John Stewart Jr, 57, said, as his Black Lives Matter flag fluttered in the wind. Stewart, an ordained pastor in the city, and the “core of seven” generally stay put in their chosen spot behind the courthouse for the entire length of an average work day: 9-5, or longer. He brings food and drink, but sometimes doesn’t eat until he gets home, he told the Guardian. As the trial enters its ninth day of witness testimony, Chauvin, 45, who is white, denies second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, in the killing of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man.

Derek Chauvin Murder Trial: Live Updates On Justice In The George Floyd Case

6:05 p.m. The final part of Wednesday’s testimony in the Derek Chauvin murder trial focused on the finding of forensic scientists who participated in the investigation of the criminal case. Much of what prosecutors and the defense chose to ask witnesses about were the pills linked to George Floyd that were found in the squad car where officers tried to place him when he was arrested last May. Prosecutors called to the stand McKenzie Anderson, who is a crime scene leader with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. She testified that no evidence was collected from the scene in Minneapolis where the incident took place. Both Floyd’s vehicle and the squad car were towed to the BCA’s headquarters for processing. She performed that task on May 27, two days after Floyd’s death and took photos of the interior and exterior of the vehicles.

Although pandemic quarantines forced the vast majority of Americans to shelter in place for most of 2020, some billionaires moved to greener pastures. Or at least ones with lower taxes. Take Elon Musk, for instance, who relocated in December 2020 to Austin, Texas—one of nine U.S. states that doesn’t collect income tax, igniting a firestorm over the fact that the three richest Americans now live in income tax-free states. (The other two, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, are residents of Washington state.)
