Neon plans 500 MW / 1000 MWh battery in Australia

Trafigura to develop Battery Energy Storage System in Belgium

Trafigura, one of the world’s leading independent commodity trading companies, has announced the first live project by Nala Renewables, its newly formed joint venture company with IFM Investors. An investment of up to EUR30 million will be made to develop one of Belgium’s largest Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”) at Nyrstar’s zinc smelting facility in Balen. Construction of the Balen BESS project is planned to start during the first half of 2021 following permitting approval, with completion in 2022. Utilising lithium-ion battery technology, the 100 MWh battery project will be able to store 25 MW for over four hours. The BESS system will provide grid stability and balancing services for the Belgium grid, as well as help shift renewable energy production into high energy demand periods.

NBN News | LARGE BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM TO HELP POWER THE HUNTER S TRANSITION TO RENEWABLES

A first of its kind 28-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), set to be installed in Newcastle, has been earmarked to help the Hunter transition into a renewable energy zone. A development application for the battery has been lodged with Newcastle City Council, proposing it be built on approximately 1.5 acres inside the Steel River Estate. If approved, the battery will be the first utility-scale BESS to be constructed in the Hunter and the first in Australia within an existing industrial precinct. The project is the result of a joint venture partnership between two Australian companies – Precinct Capital and Edify. Precinct Capital Chairman Bruce Baudinet says the battery facility will be designed to charge and discharge directly from the grid, responding to electricity market signals and disturbances to ensure stability of the grid as renewable energy penetration increases in coming years.
