TerraPower and X-energy, which the DOE chose to support under the first ARDP pathway, are looking at siting their advanced nuclear demonstrations in Washington State, the DOE said.

Electric vehicle models expected to triple in 4 years as declining battery costs boost adoption

Dive Brief: The number of electric vehicle models available to consumers is expected to more than triple in the next three years, from roughly 40 to 127 in the United States, as battery prices fall, charging infrastructure spreads and adoption rises, according to Dan Bowermaster, senior program manager for electric transportation at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).  It takes almost two decades for the U.S. auto fleet to turn over, so this is not like an iPhone adoption,  Bowermaster said Dec. 7 at a virtual seminar hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy and EPRI. There are now 187 counties in 33 states where EVs represent more than 1.9% of new vehicle sales, he said.

Amullen is a cyber security engineer with US institute

Daily Monitor Sunday December 13 2020 The statement that ‘hard work pays’ is such a tired cliché that we all roll our eyes when we hear it. But the only person who has a right to say it to us must hold a position so larger-than-life and unattainable that we should think ourselves lucky that the person is sparing time to talk to us all. One such person is Esther Amullen. She is a Ugandan cyber security engineer, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.  She works for the Electric Power Research Institute, founded in the 1970s following a power blackout that left 30 million American homes without electricity for up to 13 hours. The institute was founded to support the electricity sector and address its technical and operational challenges.

Solar vs wind: Federal study finds a winner - Governors Wind Energy Coalition

Oregon Department of Transportation/Flickr The competition between wind and solar power in the United States is breaking decisively in solar’s favor, according to a new report from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Wind power is still the dominant renewable energy source nationwide. New wind turbine plants added 9,000 megawatts of generation capacity in the United States last year to bring the total to 106,000 MW, versus 6,000 MW in new utility-scale solar plants, making that total 29,000 MW, the report said.

ENERGY TRANSITIONS: Gas plant developer bets big on CO2-free hydrogen

Photo credit: Long Ridge Energy Developers of a natural gas plant (pictured) in Ohio plan to blend 5% hydrogen in the fuel stream when the plant comes online next fall with the goal of converting to 100% hydrogen by 2030. Long Ridge Energy A wave of new natural gas-fired power plants is taking shape across Ohio, signaling an energy transition underway in the region as cheap, abundant shale gas undercuts the profitability of coal and nuclear energy. One of these new plants, though, may not only represent the current state of Ohio s fossil fuel-heavy energy mix but be the vanguard of a green hydrogen future if developers can execute their ambitious vision.
