LASG is on the right track with the proposed electricity policy and we applaud the State government for this pioneering effort to decentralise and democratise the supply of electricity to Lagosians. Other States should emulate the LASG electricity policy and start to fashion out their own electricity policies and state electricity laws. This is what we’ve termed “Energy Federalism”. The Lagos State government recently released a consultation paper on the Lagos State Electricity Policy. The consultation paper, signed by Mr Olalere Odusote, the Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlights the need for Lagos State to develop its own electricity policy to address the rapid urbanisation of Lagos State, leading to increasing demand for electricity, and the inherent electricity shortages that have hindered the socio-economic growth of the State. FG: Presidential Power Initiative Will Unlock 25GW in Five Years

By Emmanuel Addeh The federal government has reiterated that the current moves to revamp the power sector using the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), Nigerians will have access to about 25GW of electricity in the next five years. Speaking during a webinar with the Energy Transition Council, a body under the United Nations, Minister of State, Power, Goddy Jedy-Agba, who presented the keynote address at the council’s country dialogue conference, reassured that the government has the political will to make sure the goal is achieved. Jedy-Agba explained that the country was experiencing a turning point in the power sector, noting that the ministry was exploring ways of localising the energy value chain in Nigeria and giving priority to technology transfer and capacity building.
