The official ceremony kick-starting the planting of 7,000 tree seedlings across the country took place at Naperi Community Ground.
Guest of honour, Blantyre City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Joseph Makwinja, graced the ceremony marking the start of the exercise which is taking place under the theme: ‘Greening Malawi: My Responsibility.’
In his speech, Makwinja hailed ESCOM for complementing the government’s efforts in environmental conservation through the tree-planting initiative.

People in Mangochi have expressed concern over the persistent low water pressure and at times taps running dry a situation that has persisted for two months now.

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has said it has effected a temporary loadsheding program following the loss of 100MW at Nkula B Power Station.
According to a press statement seen by this publication, ESCOM said the shutdown follows the bursting of a pipe on Machine Number 5 something that poses flooding risks for the station.
The situation has also meant that 100MW of capacity is lost leaving ESCOM with 275MW against a forecast demand of 310MW
With this, ESCOM revealed that Malawians should brace for power outages during peak hours.
Dwindling water levels impacting power situation
In its update on its website, ESCOM stated that rainfall amounts which the country has received recently have not been sufficient to bring major improvement to electricity generation capacity.
