New Delhi: Income tax return filing last date (January 10) has passed. People who have filed ITR and have paid excess tax are now looking for their refund to be credited in their account. Last year, the process of claiming income tax refund was tweaked by the Income Tax Department. In order to claim an income tax refund, apart from filing an income tax return (ITR), you have to ensure that you have pre-validate your bank account in which you want to receive the income tax refund to be credited.

The extended deadline for individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns (ITR) ends today i.e. January 10, 2021. The government has extended the deadline for filing returns multiple times in the past so as to provide relief to taxpayers amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The original deadline for filing ITRs was July 31, 2002. The deadline was first extended to November 30, 2020 and thereafter to December 31, 2020. Normally, the due date for filing ITRs for all assessees whose accounts are not required to be audited is July 31. If taxpayers fail to file their returns by due date then the Income Tax department levies late return filing penalty of Rs 10,000.
