China’s Policy on Myanmar Junta Endangers its Interests: Analyst Protesters march on the Chinese Embassy in Yangon in February. / The Irrawaddy 279 By The Irrawaddy 5 April 2021 China’s refusal to condemn Myanmar’s military regime endangers its interests in its southern neighbor as anti-Chinese sentiment grows, according to the UK-based think-tank Chatham House. A report by senior research fellow Dr. Gareth Price said the lack of criticism of Myanmar’s military takeover shows China’s self-interest, saying it is happy to deal with whoever wields power in Naypyidaw. Price said: “China may feel that, regardless of the outcome, it will continue to be Myanmar’s major partner. But that feeling may be a misjudgment because, if the military is forced to back down, it may result in a more pronounced anti-China tilt, threatening its strategic interests.

He appealed in person to Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, to stop killing his people and talk to his opponents after five months of anti-regime protests. Davutoglu spoke for Turkey but also, indirectly, for the US and the west. He had conferred with Hillary Clinton, then secretary of state, before making the trip. His message: it’s not too late to call a halt; the alternative is civil war. But Assad turned him down flat.

Myanmar Death Toll Tops 500 As Protesters Stage Garbage Strike Myanmar protesters held overnight candle-lit vigils after an advocacy group said security forced had now killed over 500 people since a Feb. 1 coup, and as activists on Tuesday launched a new civil disobedience campaign to hurl garbage onto streets. Out of 14 civilians killed in Myanmar on Monday, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said at least eight were in the South Dagon district of Yangon. Security forces in the area fired a much heavier-calibre weapon than usual on Monday to clear a barricade of sand bags, witnesses said. It was not immediately clear what type of weapon was used.
