WASHINGTON (NYTIMES) - American officials announced new sanctions on Myanmar in the wake of the recent military coup, targeting two state-owned businesses with connections to the armed forces as part of an escalating international effort to jolt the country back onto a democratic path.
The move on Wednesday (April 21) came two days after European Union officials expanded their own sanctions against Myanmar s military leadership, targeting 10 officials who were involved in toppling Aung San Suu Kyi s elected government and a violent crackdown on protesters.
The Treasury Department identified Myanmar Timber Enterprise and Myanmar Pearl Enterprise, representing the country s thriving timber and pearl industries, as sources of funding for the military and its leadership. The sanctions bar the companies from doing business in the United States or with American companies, and their assets were frozen under Wednesday s order.

Brussels: The EU on Monday imposed sanctions on 10 Myanmar junta officials and two conglomerates linked to the military over the coup and bloody crackdown on protesters, European officials said. The military regime is continuing its course of violence and manoeuvring the country into a dead end. That is why we are increasing the pressure to bring the military to the negotiating table, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said after virtual talks with his EU counterparts. In addition to the listing of individuals, two economic conglomerates that are attributed to the military are also affected, he added. European diplomats said the two firms hit with asset freezes and visa bans were the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) and Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd (MEHL) which dominate sectors including trading, alcohol, cigarettes and consumer goods.

YANGON: Chinese trade data gave a mixed snapshot of neighbour Myanmar s ability to keep up metal shipments in March amid unrest after February s coup, with flows of nickel pig iron (NPI) dwindling to almost nothing but those of copper doubling month-on-month.
With Chinese firms directly involved in Myanmar metals mining, imports of stainless steel raw material NPI from the Southeast Asian country were just 298 tonnes last month, data from China s customs showed on Tuesday (Apr 20).
